Family Medicine Celebrates Largest Class of Residents in Match 2025
Referral, Consultation, and Hospitalization
Further investigation into alternative diagnoses should be considered if symptoms persist beyond or worsen over 3 to 4 weeks
Antibiotics do not reduce subsequent health care use for patients with acute bronchitis.
LEAWOOD, KS—The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) congratulates the future family physicians who matched in the 2025 National Resident Matching Program® Main Residency Match (NRMP). These future family physicians are critical to meeting the growing need for primary care clinicians in the United States.
“Match Day is here, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome the next generation of family physicians,” said Jen Brull, M.D., FAAFP, AAFP President. “To everyone who matched into a family medicine residency—congratulations! You are stepping into a career filled with purpose, connection and impact. The AAFP is here to support you at every stage, championing family physicians as they advocate for their patients and communities. Welcome to the family!”
After the first round of the NRMP Match, 4,574 positions were filled with students and graduates pursuing family medicine residency training. By the time this process concludes, we anticipate that over 5,300 positions will be filled, making it the largest class ever of new family medicine residents.
Match Day is a milestone moment for medical students and graduates as they learn where they will complete their residency training after years of exploring specialties during medical school, months of interviewing at residency programs and, finally, submitting a ranked list of their preferred programs to the NRMP.
“I am thrilled to welcome and celebrate the next generation of physicians who matched into family medicine this year. Family physicians make the best leaders, listeners and partners in care,” said R. Shawn Martin, AAFP EVP and CEO. “While the health care landscape is ever-changing, your role as a family physician remains constant: the ultimate advocate for your patients. The AAFP will always be in your corner as you work to keep your patients, their loved ones and communities safe and healthy. Your journey is our purpose.”
The Match signals the importance of family physicians as leaders, advocates and trusted messengers in their communities.
“There is an urgent need for more primary care physicians to meet the needs of our population. We know that access to a usual source of care, like a family physician, leads to lower health care costs and healthier lives,” said Martin. “The AAFP works with policymakers, health leaders and family physicians across the country to invest in primary care and bolster the workforce, while ensuring those who have chosen family medicine continue to have the resources to care for patients and communities.”
Students and graduates choose family medicine because it allows them to pursue their many interests in medicine, practice community-oriented care and form lifelong relationships with entire families. Where there are people, there are family physicians working to make communities healthier.
A full 2025 Match analysis, along with graphs and additional information, will be available this afternoon on aafp.org.

Numbered List
When the diagnosis of acute bronchitis is in question, or if the patient requests a prescription for antibiotics, delayed antibiotic prescribing reduces unnecessary antibiotic use without affecting patient safety or satisfaction
Antibiotic prescribing for acute bronchitis runs counter to antibiotic stewardship. Despite the lack of evidence of significant benefit, more than 70% of patients with acute bronchitis are prescribed antibiotics in the United States
Antibiotics were associated with increased adverse effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, rash, and vaginitis (relative risk = 1.20; 95% CI, 1.05–1.36; number needed to harm = 24).25 There was no difference in general improvement as assessed by clinicians at follow-up (relative risk = 1.1; 95% CI, 0.99–1.2).25 Some of the trials included in this systematic review reported no benefits of antibiotic use and did not report cough as a separate outcome. Additionally, there was a concern that some of the trials may have included patients with pneumonia, increasing the chance of finding benefits from antibiotic use
